about

Pedway is:
Caroline Davis - alto saxophone (maitri.bandcamp.com)
Matthew Golombisky - contrabass (matthewgolombisky.com)
Quin Kirchner - drums & percussion (quinlankirchner.com)

Pedway is a musical collaboration with its roots in Chicago; Quin Kirchner (drums), Matthew Golombisky (bass), and Caroline Davis (alto saxophone). Steeped in the traditions of jazz, rock, and whatever else has entered their consciousness, this group explores unchartered territory each time they perform. Their improvisations are inspired by many local Chicago groups and act as a bridge connecting a range of musical styles.

Golombisky (IfCM Teaching Artist, Tomorrow Music Orchestra director) and Kirchner (Wild Belle, NOMO, Greg Ward) met in New Orleans in 2001 and performed in numerous groups ranging from quirky, space rock (The Other Planets) to raucous free jazz (QMRplus), developing an ever-evolving deep communication as a rhythm section (see also: GKduo).

After Hurricane Katrina, they moved to Chicago where they met Davis (JazzTimes 2012 Best New Artist Expanded Critics‘ Poll, All About Jazz Best Release of the Year). The three quickly began playing in several groups, including Golombisky’s 30+ piece chamber ensemble, Tomorrow Music Orchestra; co-led electrifying quintet Zing!, where they were joined by guitarist Dave Miller and trumpeter James Davis; and much, much more.

In 2006, Pedway was born; a project “without words”. Pedway decided to never discuss, prepare, or verbalize aural material. This music is purely improvised; primal and energizing. They allow themselves to find grooves, use repetition, and develop melodic material, focusing on one another in the moment.

Members of the group have collaborated with Tony Malaby, Jeff Parker, Tim Daisy, Dave Rempis, Jeb Bishop, Ted Sirota, Ellis Marsalis, Greg Ward, Ed Peterson, Wild Belle, NOMO and Tomorrow Music Orchestra, among others.

“The monotony of this piece lingers beautifully, balancing gracefully on the edge of inspiration, an allegory for expectant everyday emotion. The sound builds, the texture matures and swells to an assumed moment of ‘beginning’, at which point the group comes to full realization and, instead of abandoning the hanging tone, they sustain and decay into an unchanged resolution.”

about

Pedway Chicago, Illinois

Pedway decided to never discuss, prepare, or verbalize aural material. What transpired was a tight knit trio that would often have the audience in disbelief that the music was improvised. They allow themselves to find grooves, use repetition, and develop melodic material, focusing on one another in the moment. This music is primal and energizing. ... more
